I use rod for all my stainless steel work in my garden designs. So it was nice to get a call from Rod asking me to advise them on what plants they should use to create a winning outdoor room.
The judges had made it clear that their challenge was to block out the two story building behind them.
How do you do that in the middle of winter!
The other issue was space. With a 500 mm gap between the fence and the deck it did not leave a lot of room to play with. We solved the problem by using 4.5m high winter glow ornamental pear trees. These were field dug on Friday morning and delivered that afternoon fresh out Of the ground. They are grown in special root control bags which allow them to be dug up at a larger size.

The trees had to go into the back yard which was interesting considering there was no rear access. The only way in was through the middle of the house. The trees weigh approximately 80 kg and it took 3 guys to lift them through the centre of the house. Interesting excercise trying not to scratch the freshly painted walls and new kitchen.

We used winter glow pears because they are very late in dropping their leaves in australia.
They basically go straight back into flower so you end up with a semi decidous tree. They have a lovely dark green foliage in summer and fibrous root system is shallow enough not to cause problems with pipes and paths.

The trees were planted 1.5 m apart which will contain their final size and give a living screen that is about 5-6 m high. The competition for light and water and space limits the growth of the trees allowing you to place these trees in such a small space.

We have these winter glow pears available in various sizes.

Next week I will show you how to pleach trees into a green fence by pruning.

See you at the farm

Ron

Why is Easter a good time to plant trees in the garden.

Autumn is here and with it the colours of autumn make this a very special time of the year. The chestnuts are falling of the trees at the moment and we wake up to the sound of gangs of cockatoos screeching in the early morning before descending on the chestnut trees for a feast.
So why is this a good time of the year to plant trees?

At this time of the year you have the combination on mild weather with some rain setting the ground up as a nice environment for plants. The warmth in the ground will help your trees settle in and still develop some roots before shutting down for winter. Planting now gives your trees an edge in spring. They will be able to get straight into leaf production without spending lots of time establishing new roots. of course they will do both but the work that was done during autumn will certainly help them along in spring.

The other advantage is that it is a much nicer time of the year to be in the garden. So why not use the great weather at this time of the year to buy some beautiful trees and get into the garden. There is nothing nicer than seeing the sun stream through a canopy of colored autumn.

Here are my top 5 autumn trees.

1. Norway Maples
2. Nissa sylvatica or tupelo tree.
3. October glory maple
4. Malus ioensis also known as the betchel crab apple
5. Golden robinea

I invite you to come up to the farm this Easter And enjoy autumn with us
We are opening our new outdoor studio where you can sit and chat about the plants you have seen whilst having a complimentary coffee or tea.

I hope to see you there.

Happy planting
Ron
